WHY WE DO IT
Our most famous program within the Community Outreach Program is our “Beyond the Call“. This program focuses on providing a special Christmas experience for some of our less fortunate local families. On Christmas Eve, Santa Claus, while riding on a fire truck delivers food and gifts to these families. “Beyond the Call” has now assisted four hundred seventy-seven (477) children of one hundred twenty (120) different families within the City of Newport, spending more than sixty-five thousand dollars ($65,000) since its’ inception in 1993.Annual Scholarships – Local 45 awards two (2), one thousand dollar ($1,000) scholarships to one (1) graduating senior at each high school in the City of Newport. To date, Local 45 has awarded $32,000 in scholarships.
The “Power Pack” food drive supports children in the Newport Intermediate School. “Power Packs” provide children in the school with food that can be easily prepared to eat for the weekend and holidays. These children may otherwise go hungry until they return to school if they did not receive these packs to take home. With the assistance of Newport Kroger Marketplace and local shoppers, Local 45 raised over $38,000 in food items for the children in our ” Power Pack” Fundraiser since February 2018.
Operation Warm – Coat Drive provides warmth, confidence, and hope to children in need in our community through the gift of brand-new coats. These coats get distributed to the children in our local schools in December.Over 50% of the children attending these schools, walk to and from school each day.
~Giving The Gift Of Warmth, It’s More Than Just A Coat~
Veterans Honor Flight Sponsorship – honoring a local Veteran for their sacrifices and achievements by flying them through Honor Flight Tri-State to Washington D.C. to see their memorial with a guardian of their choice.
